National Emergency Alert System

As part of their ongoing efforts to keep our country and communities safe during emergencies, the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Emergency Management Agency will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The EAS test plays a key role in ensuring the nation is prepared for all hazards, and that the U.S. public can receive critical and vital information, should it ever be needed. The first nationwide test will be conducted Wednesday, November 9 at 2 p.m. ET. This test may last up to three and a half minutes, and will be transmitted via television and radio stations within the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Similar to local emergency alert system tests, an audio message will interrupt television and radio programming indicating: “This is a test.” When the test is over, regular programming will resume. For more information about the nationwide Emergency Alert System test, please visit http://www.fema.gov/medialibrary/media_records/6407 and www.FCC.gov . On November 9 at 2 p.m. EDT, please remember: Don’t stress; it’s only a test

Drug Free Schools Pledge

In recognition of Red Ribbon Week, members from the Student Council led students in a Drug Free Pledge during lunch.  The Red Ribbon campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered Kiki Camarena, a DEA agent, in 1986.  This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs.

Act 183 (SLH 2010) Amended Kindergaten Entry Age

The 2010 Legislature passed Act 183, which amends the age requirement for entrance into public school kindergarten.  Beginning School Year 2013-14, students who are five years old by the first day of instruction may enroll in kindergarten.

Currently, the Early Learning Council is working on developing an early learning system that partners both private childcare providers and the public schools to offer quality programs to the student cohort with five-year old birthdates from August 2 to December 31.  Information on the possible plan to partner private childcare providers and public schools will be available next year.

5th Grade Q & A

This morning, counselors from Mililani Middle School spent some time with our 5th graders talking about life at MMS.  Students wrote questions on index cards ahead of time and the counselors gave a short answer for each one. "How many classes do we have?"  "What about recess?"  "What if there's a fight?"
Mahalo to Mr. Joel Shiroma & Mrs. Tricia Ho for answering these types of questions and giving reassurance to students who might be nervous about going to middle school.  Also, thank you to our own Mr. Brian Matsushige for helping to organize this event.

Shelving books in the library, supervising children on field trips, helping at the flu shot clinic or planning special events...  Mahalo to all of our volunteers!

Cafeteria News

Starting on May 9, 2011, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 experienced a change in how lunch is served. Instead of being served specific portions by our cafeteria staff, students in the upper grades will be offered a choice on what and how much to take for most side dishes. Main entrees will still be served by our staff, but students will serve themselves for fruits, vegetables and other items. This directive from the School Food Service Branch of the Department of Education, not only cuts down on waste, but also allows our students to be responsible for making good choices and apply what they have learned about health and nutrition.

"Sort It Out" - Assembly

2nd Grade Reef Walk Field Trip to Maili Beach

With the help of a $1,000 grant from the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, students in 2nd grade went on their annual parent-child reef walk field trip to Maili Beach in April 2011.  The purposes of the field trip were to:
  • observe marine life in its natural environment
  • identify different body parts of the animals
  • examine the different zones of the environment
  • identify ways natural resources can be conserved and protected

For the past four years, Mililani Mauka Elementary formed a partnership with the University of Hawaii.  The graduate students who volunteered their time helped make this field trip an enjoyable learning experience for everyone.  After the field trip, students developed a better understanding of how plants depend on animals (interdependent relationship) and the different kinds of organisms each environment supports.  Parents enjoyed the quality time they spent with their child, and were impressed with the amount of learning that took place.

Elementary school students pledge to save energy in 2010

Out of the hundreds of creative and imaginative entries sent in by elementary school students from across the island, each with a New Year’s Resolution to help save energy and the environment, four students from Kamiloiki, Pearl City Highlands, and Mililani Mauka were selected as winners.  The winners selected will receive a classroom performance by the popular Mad Science of Hawaii, madcap “scientists” who bring science education to life with fun, hands-on workshops.

Congratulations to...

Matthew Ogawa, Gr. 2, Mrs. Nashiro

Cassidy Silva, Gr. 4, Mrs. Horie

As part of Hawaiian Electric's school-based energy conservation competition, the Home Energy Challenge, elementary school students from participating schools were asked to create their own New Year's Resolution to help save energy, and to draw a poster of their ideas.

“We wanted to show that everyone, including children, can make a resolution to help protect our environment by using energy wisely,” said Kaiulani de Silva, director of Education & Consumer Affairs. “Through energy conservation, all of the children who entered and our island ecosystem are really winners.”

Thirteen schools from across the islands have signed up to learn about energy conservation and compete for a grand prize of $10,000 as part of the fourth annual Hawaiian Electric Home Energy Challenge, a school-based competition sponsored by the State of Hawaii Department of Education and Hawaiian Electric Company. There are also prizes of $6,000 and $3,000 for the second- and third- placing schools and four additional, special $1,000 prizes for creating an Energy Conservation Project.

Of course, everyone participating wins with resulting lower electric bills, a better understanding of an energy-conservation lifestyle, and the feeling of active involvement in taking care of the environment.
