Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year. Welcome aboard to all of our new students and families. We hope that you and your child had an enjoyable vacation and are ready for an active year of learning and working together.

We will continue to focus on standards-based learning in all content areas this year as well as our six General Learner Outcomes (GLOs), our seven thinking dispositions, and our six Character Ed traits. Students will be recognized on their achievement of the GLOs at our quarterly Honors’ Assemblies. Please see our parent handbook for a description of the GLOs and our grade level indicators. Please see the DOE website for a description of each grade level’s standards in all content areas at http://doe.k12.hi.us. You can also check out our school website at http://www.k12.hi.us/~milmauka.

Please join us on August 26 for Open House. We will have our first community meeting of the year from 6:30-7:00 in the cafeteria to share our school’s Hawaii State Assessment results, school goals for 2009-10, and to introduce our PTO and School Community Council representatives. Entertainment and Sally Foster will set up a display so you can see what’s new for 2009-10. Sam Nichols from Hawaiian Electric will do a short presentation about the Home Energy Challenge. Classroom visitations will follow the meeting from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Is your electric bill growing by leaps and bounds? Want ideas on how to save electricity? Sign up for the Hawaiian Electric Home Energy Challenge! Last year, Mililani Mauka El was awarded $10,000 for the second year in a row for winning the Hawaiian Electric Home Energy Challenge, so we signed up for the challenge again this year. Be on the lookout for the Home Energy Challenge sign-up.

The PTO will have their membership drive and magazine drive fundraiser during the month of August. The PTO uses all funds that are raised to support the needs of the school and to offer enrichment to all of our students. The PTO pays for our part time art teacher and supports each teacher and grade level. Please support the PTO by becoming a member.

The school will sell 2010 Entertainment Books beginning August 27 followed by the Sally Foster catalog sale beginning September 14. If you don’t need an Entertainment Book or gift wrap, you can support our school by donating your HI-5 recyclables during our quarterly recycling drives. Any money earned from fundraisers or recycling will go to technology needs.

Thank you in advance for your help and support this year. The teachers and I look forward to working with you to create another successful year of learning for your child.

Sincerely,

Carol Petersen, Principal
