Last night, parents in the Mililani Complex Area were invited to a workshop, "Bullying & Their Victims," with Jarret Horibata, Ph.D. Dr. Horibata is a Clinical Psychologist with the Hawaii Department of Education and talked about intervention strategies for the school, the family and the student.

As a part of his presentation, he gave advice for parents to prevent bullying:

  • Keep an eye out for signs of bullying
  • Ask children direct questions about how peers treat them and if they witness bullying
  • Work with teachers, school staff, etc. to address bullying
  • Inquire about the bullying policy at your child's school
  • Suggest the implementation of a comprehensive anti-bullying program
  • Be a positive role model by not bullying children or adults
